Spring Bulbs - Tulips Bulbs

The Tulip is one of the most wide-spread bulbous flower. It appears early in spring. The botanical name of the plant is Tulipa. It is considered that The Netherlands is native land to the tulip. But later on is established that the land of origin of the tulip is Turkey, also western and central areas of Asia. The name 'Tulip' comes from the Turkish word ‘turban’. It is called that because likeness between the shape of the flower and the turban is caught.

But sure enough it was in The Netherlands where many varieties, colours and shapes were selected. In 17th century the tulip bulbs were used instead of money. People supplanted exotic bulbs for food and clothes.

But gradually the value of these bulbs went down. That began at the end of the 17th century when the prise of the tulip bulbs became very low and the plants were very wide- spread.

The most popular Tulip cultivars are Tulip Parrot, Tulip French and Tulip. Their flowers grow an inch daily, even cut. The flowers of the Tulip Parrot looks like a tassels. Tulip French is the largest variety. Common features for all tulips are that stems bend towards the light, bloom in the morning and close back in the evening. Cut flowers last 7 – 10 days, but they should be put in water immediately after cutting.
